Valnemulin is an antibiotic used in swine, rabbits and poultry for the treatment and prevention of bacterial diseases.
INDICATIONS
- Swine (Pigs): It is used for the treatment and prevention of swine dysentery caused by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, porcine proliferative enteropathy (ileitis) caused by Lawsonia intracellularis, swine enzootic pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, and porcine colonic spirochetosis (colitis).
- Poultry: Indicated for Metaphylaxis (prevention of disease spread) of chronic respiratory disease (CRD), and airsacculitis.
- Rabbits: It is indicated for the treatment of epizootic rabbit enteropathy (ERE).
ADMINISTRATION
- Calculate Dosage: Determine the required dosage in mg of valnemulin per kg of the animal’s body weight per day.
- Determine Feed Intake: The daily feed consumption of the animals (which may be reduced in sick animals) is estimated or recorded to calculate the correct inclusion rate of the premix in the feed.
- Prepare Pre-mixture: To ensure uniform mixing, the required quantity of valnemulin premix is first thoroughly mixed with a smaller quantity of a feed ingredient with a similar physical nature (e.g., wheat middlings). This initial mixture often uses a proportion of 1 part premix to 10 or 20 parts feed ingredient, depending on the concentration of the premix.
- Incorporate into Final Feed: This pre-mixture is then added to the rest of the daily feed ration and mixed well.
- Feed to Animals: The medicated feed is provided to the animals as their only feed source for the duration (7 days to several weeks).
