Azaperone injection is a potent neuroleptic sedative indicated for use in pigs.
INDICATIONS
- Controlling Aggression: It is widely used to prevent fighting when mixing or regrouping pigs from different litters or pens, helping to establish social order with minimal fighting.
- Stress Prevention: It is administered to reduce stress and anxiety in pigs, such as before and during transport.
- Obstetric Conditions: It can be used as an aid in farrowing (birthing) or for sows that may devour their piglets.
- Pre-anesthetic: It is often used as a pre-medication agent before administering general or local anesthesia to calm the animal and facilitate the use of lower doses of other drugs.
- Minor Procedures and Restraint: It helps in the chemical restraint of uncooperative pigs for minor clinical procedures, such as physical exams or catheter placement.
ADMINISTRATION
- Route: Intramuscular (IM) injection only. Must not be given intravenously or subcutaneously.
- Injection Site: Strictly in the muscle behind the ear, as close as possible to the base of the ear, or into the rump.
- Needle Use: A long hypodermic needle should be used and inserted perpendicular to the skin.
- Caution for Heavy Animals: Injecting with a short needle into the neck of heavy animals risks depositing the drug into the fat tissue, which can result in an insufficient or ineffective dose.
- Volume Limits: Do not administer more than 5 ml per single injection site.
